Why spiders move into Pahrump garages in the fall

Spiderweb glowing in a garage doorway at desert sunset

Every fall we get the same kind of call. Someone opens a garage cabinet, moves a box that has not been touched since spring, or reaches for a pair of gloves on the workbench, and there is a spider web where there was none a few weeks ago. It is not your imagination. When the nights start to cool off in Pahrump, spiders start looking for shelter, and a garage is about the best shelter a desert property has to offer.

What changes in the fall

Through the summer, most spiders around a desert home stay outside. They live in block walls, under rocks and landscape gravel, in woodpiles and in the base of shrubs, and there is plenty to eat out there. As the evenings cool, two things happen at once. The insects they feed on start moving toward warm, sheltered spots, and the spiders follow the food. A garage gives them still air, steady temperatures, dark corners and a steady supply of crickets and other insects that wander in under the door.

That is why a garage can go from clean to cobwebbed in what feels like a week. Nothing about the house went wrong. The season changed, and the garage became the most comfortable place on the lot.

Where they hide

Spiders want places that are dark, dry and rarely disturbed. In the garages we treat around Nye County, the same spots come up again and again:

  • Behind and under stored boxes, especially cardboard stacked against a wall
  • The bottom track and corners of the garage door, where the seal has gaps
  • Under shelving, workbenches and the space beneath a parked vehicle
  • Around water heaters, utility boxes and anywhere pipes or wires come through the wall

Sheds, carports and storage containers follow the same pattern. If you can go a month without touching it, a spider can move in behind it.

Why cleaning alone does not keep them out

Knocking down webs and sweeping out corners helps, and it is worth doing. But it does not change why the spiders came in. As long as insects keep getting in under the door and through gaps in the walls, spiders will keep following them. Clearing the webs without dealing with the food supply and the entry points usually buys a week or two, and then the webs are back.

Spiders are a sign of what else is getting in. A garage with a lot of spiders almost always has a lot of crickets, beetles or other small insects coming through the same gaps.

What actually helps

A few changes make a real difference, and none of them are complicated:

  • Swap cardboard boxes for sealed plastic bins and keep them off the floor where you can
  • Check the garage door seal and the corners of the door track for daylight showing through
  • Keep firewood, yard debris and stored gravel or pavers away from the garage walls outside
  • Turn off or change bright outdoor lights near the garage door, since they draw the insects spiders feed on

On our visits we treat the outside perimeter of the home and the garage, the door thresholds and the spots where insects and spiders come in, and we look for the gaps that keep the problem coming back. That is part of our general pest control service, and it is why a garage that gets regular perimeter service tends to stay quiet through the fall and winter.

A word about bites

Most spiders you will find in a Pahrump garage are more of a nuisance than a danger, but some species around southern Nevada can deliver a painful bite. Wear gloves when you move stored items, shake out shoes and work clothes that have been sitting in the garage, and do not reach into dark spaces bare-handed. If you or a family member is bitten and the area swells, spreads, or you feel unwell, contact a doctor or urgent care right away. A pest company is the right call for the garage, not for the bite.
