What actually happens on a first pest control visit

A first visit from a pest control technician is mostly conversation and inspection before any treatment happens. You are not just paying someone to walk in and spray around the baseboards. The visit starts with us trying to understand what is actually going on at your property, then talking it through with you about where the problem is likely coming from and how it probably got there.

What we ask before we start

Expect a few straightforward questions. What are you seeing, and where. Is it worse in one room or all over the house. Does it get worse at a certain time of day, after it rains, or when the weather turns. Do you have pets, young kids, or anyone in the household with health concerns we should plan around. Straight answers here help more than guesses, since they change where we focus first and how we schedule the rest of the work.

The walk-around outside

Most visits start outside, walking the full perimeter of the house before anything else happens. We look at the foundation, the eaves, where pipes and wires enter the walls, woodpiles, moisture around AC units, and anything else that gives pests a way in or a reason to stay close to the house. This part usually takes longer than people expect, because the outside is where the real entry points tend to be, even when the complaint you called about is something happening inside, like activity along a kitchen counter or in a closet.

Interior work and what to move or unlock

Interior work depends on what we find outside and what you are actually dealing with. It is usually focused on kitchens, bathrooms, baseboards, under sinks, attics, and anywhere there has been activity reported. A little prep ahead of time makes the visit faster and lets us reach the spots that actually matter:

  • Clear out from under sinks and in cabinets where pests have been seen
  • Move pet food, water bowls, and pet bedding out of the rooms we will be treating
  • Unlock gates, side doors, sheds, or storage areas we will need to get into
  • Let us know about a crawl space, detached garage, or attic access ahead of time

Timing, pets, kids, and getting back in

A first visit usually runs somewhere between thirty minutes and a little over an hour, depending on the size of the property and how much ground there is to cover both inside and out. For pets and kids, the general rule is to stay out of treated areas until things have dried or settled, and the technician will tell you what that looks like on the spot based on exactly what was done that day. If you keep birds, fish, or reptiles, mention it before we start, since their housing may need to be moved or covered during interior work.

What one visit can and cannot do

Honestly, one visit is rarely the whole fix. It knocks back what is active, addresses the obvious entry points, and gives us a clear look at what we are actually dealing with. But pest pressure builds up over time, and eggs, nests, or colonies that were not directly reached on day one can still produce activity for a while afterward. That is normal, and on its own it is not a sign the first visit did not work.

Why there is a follow-up visit

The follow-up visit is where the real progress shows up. We check whether the pressure has actually dropped since the first visit, whether the entry points we addressed are holding, and whether anything new has turned up that the first visit missed. For problems that have been building for months before anyone called, it can take more than two visits before things feel fully under control. We would rather tell you honestly where things stand than promise a one-and-done fix that does not hold up once the season changes.
