Scorpion season in Pahrump: what actually works

Every summer we get the same call, worded almost the same way: 'We have lived here for years and never seen one, and now there are three in the house.' Nothing has gone wrong with your home. The season changed.

Why they turn up when they do

Scorpions are nocturnal hunters. As nights warm, the insects they eat — crickets, roaches, small spiders — get active around your exterior lights, your irrigation and your landscaping. The scorpions follow the food, and the food is against your house.

Then they need somewhere cool and dark to sit out the day. A block wall, a rock bed, a wood pile, a stack of pavers, the shaded side of the slab, the gap under a door sweep. If those are close to the structure, some of them end up inside it.

Why a daytime walk-around finds nothing

Because they are not out. A daytime inspection tells you where scorpions could live. It does not tell you how many are on your lot.

Scorpions fluoresce under ultraviolet light. Walk the same property after dark with a blacklight and the picture is completely different — a wall you would have called clean lights up. That is the only honest way to see what a property actually has.

The four things that actually reduce them

• Treat the harborage, not just a band of wall. Cracks, voids, weep holes, block walls, rock and wood piles are where they sit out the day.
• Knock down the insects. Scorpions are following crickets and roaches. Take away the menu and the population drops with it.
• Seal the entries. Door sweeps, weep screens, garage seals, utility penetrations and expansion joints — the same gaps that let your cooling out.
• Keep at it. Pahrump backs onto open desert, so more will keep walking in. One treatment resets the count; a schedule holds it down.

What to do tonight

Shake out shoes before you put them on. Do not leave laundry or towels on the floor. Pull beds a few inches off the wall and keep bedding from touching the floor. Fit a door sweep on any exterior door you can see daylight under. And if someone is stung and has trouble breathing, a racing heart, or numbness that spreads, get medical advice — that is the bark scorpion, and it is worth taking seriously.
