Home defense against roaches: keeping a Nevada kitchen clean

The first thing worth saying: a German cockroach problem is not a verdict on your housekeeping. They are carried in — in a box, a grocery bag, a used appliance, a piece of secondhand furniture, a delivery. One pregnant female is enough.

Where they actually are

Not on the floor. German roaches live in the warm, damp, hidden places you never open:

• The motor housing and drip tray of a refrigerator
• The void behind and beneath a dishwasher
• Cabinet door hinges, drawer rails and the underside of shelving
• Plumbing penetrations under sinks and behind toilets
• The gap between a countertop and the wall

That is why you see them at night, and why seeing one in daylight usually means the hiding places are already full.

Why the spray can makes it worse

Contact spray kills the roaches you can see. The rest scatter deeper into the structure, and in an apartment or a duplex, straight into a shared wall. You have not reduced the population — you have spread it out and made it harder to reach.

What genuinely helps

• Take away water first. A dripping trap or a damp cabinet base does more for a roach population than crumbs do.
• Break down cardboard and get it out of the house — corrugated cardboard is a roach hotel and it is how they arrive.
• Store dry food and pet food in sealed containers, and do not leave pet bowls down overnight.
• Clean under and behind appliances, not just around them. Pull the fridge out once.
• Seal the gaps: escutcheons at plumbing penetrations, caulk at the counter line, and the gap behind the kick space.

When it is time to call

If you are seeing roaches in daylight, finding droppings that look like ground pepper in drawers and hinges, or catching a musty smell in the kitchen, the population is past a homeowner fix. A real treatment starts with an inspection of the places above, treats the harborage rather than the floor, and comes back timed to the egg hatch — because eggs already laid are shielded inside their case, and that is what makes a single treatment fail.
